NOTE: Here is another diary entry of James Peter McPherson. Final drafts on my book, The Jabezes in My Tree, writing on a new book and family things again have put blogging and the diary at the end of the To-Do List. I am

well forenoon. Ground scythe and cut hay P.M.

hay – & helping Mr Jackman to haul his hay.
3rd Sat. At
laying out of road by Jackmans and Hendersons.
4th Sun. At
home. Visited by Mr. & Mrs. Anderson & Mrs. Lester.
5th
Mon. At Curtis's with assessment roll to hear appeals. Meeting of
Democrats. At Lamberts in the evening where I met with Messers Bird
and Crawford, and remained all night.

a letter from Ann Adamson. Mary at store.

Mr. Blackburns forenoon --- hoeing Corn for Mr. Lester afternoon.

corn for Mr. Lester.

hay. Addressed letters for Mr.Malone. Storm of thunder, lightening,
wind and rain towards evening.

home. Mary at Hendersons & Jackmans. Had call from Mrs.
Thomson and Jessie Stewart.

out tax list for School district No. 8. At Squire Lesters getting
out summons for Wm Dunkle at the insistance of P. Nash.

hay for Self forenoon and for Mr. Anderson afternoon.

early in the morning and a little during the forenoon. At home till

home forenoon making vest. At Squire Lesters attending suit between
P. Nash and Wm. Dunkle which was adjourned till 14th
of August. Harvesting for Mr. Lester afternoon.

for Lester ¾ of a day. Recd letter from Father in Law.

forenoon. Harvesting for Lester P.M.

letter to Father in Law. Harvesting for Lester.
7th Sat. Binding
for about an hour in the morning for Lester, when it came on to rain
and continued so at intervals during the day.

Mr. Miles and met Jackman and then went with him to see where W.
Dunkle was hauling logs on 2nd
July. At Mr. Bairds, went from there to Mount Vernon to hear Mr. (Name unreadable)

Mon. Harvesting for Mr. Lester from 10 AM till 4 o'clock.

subpoena on Wm. Jackman. Recd a letter from Ann Adamson.

Thurs. Cutting hay, assisted by Wm. Cairncross forenoon.
13th Fri. At
Madison in company with Wm. Jackman. Posted letter to C. Wilson, Blk
Earth.
14th Sat. Raining
forenoon. Attending case of Nash versus Dunkle. Jury returned a
verdict of “no cause of action.” Dd Beat, S. Lamont, Dd Bright,
J.P. Beard, Thomas Anderson & Wm Henderson composed the jury.
Agreed to cut 3 tons of hay for H. Boland.
15th Sun. At
Mr. Miles. At Mr. Henderson and Olegs at night.
16th Mon. Messers
Henderson and Oleg at my house in the morning when latter settled
with former for damage done to farmers barn by latters cattle, by
giving his note for $10, secured by Mortgage on a Corn. At Christs
forenoon. Put up hay afternoon.
17th Tues. Making
hay.
18th Wed. At
Lesters for chicken feed forenoon – making hay afternoon - at
Christs & Nashs evening.
19th Thurs. Making
hay. Messers Mann, Sweat, Bishop & Rice, called when out
shooting.
20th Fri. Making
hay – Sent for 5 books for Library.
21st Sat. Hemming
sleepers, forenoon – putting up hay afternoon.
22nd Sun. At
Bairds & H. Bolands in the (“evening” lined out //JGH) afternoon. Thunder storm in the evening.
23rd Mon. At
home braiding straw and weaving the breaking. Mary at store.
Norwegian who cut hay for Mr. Bright came to board. Mr. B to pay his
board at 2/^
per day, on his return from the lake..

hay. H Boland stacked his hay. H. Thomason left for home after
dinner. Recd a letter from Charles Wilson, Blk. Earth. Raining
afternoon and very heavy in the evening.
2nd Thurs. Dull
and cold forenoon. At William Cairncross land, Barnett Brinks &
Stephen Hales, afternoon.
3rd Fri. Posted
letter to land office in relation to preemption fees. Visited by
Messers Bird, Mann and Sweat. At Christs at noon. Mowing forenoon –
At Olegs afternoon. Jackmans, Edis, Cummings and Hendersons Cattle
lost.
4th Sat. Put
up last of Christs hay forenoon – Christ hauled his hay – Cut
hay afternoon.
5th Sun. Went
with John Counahan
to see his claim. At Miles in the afternoon.
6th Mon. Pulling
up weeds forenoon. At John Edi's afternoon.
7th Tues. Hauled
my seed wheat from H Bolands and began to drag it in with John Edi's
oxen.
8th Wed. Dragging
in wheat. Recd a letter from the land office in relation to
pre-emption Claims – At Mr. Bartells in the evening; recd from him
$1.91fees and postage for entering pre-emption Claim, from 1st
visit for D. Bartell.

Thurs. Dragging in wheat. Made out pre-emption Claim.

Notice of Judical Election. Went to Mr. J.W. Thomas, Black Earth

Thurs. Returned home by a little past noon.

Fri. Making corn crib and stacking corn. At Squire Lesters
afternoon.
18th Sat. Went
up in the morning to thrash for Mr. Lester – horses did not come
till near noon. Began to thrash after dinner.

Sun. At Mr. A. Davidsons afternoon.
20th
Mon. Began to thrash at Mr. Lesters. Stopt by rain at 10 o'clock
A.M. Cut pants for Billy.
21st Tues. Made
pants for Billy, etc.
22nd Wed. At
assemby district convention at C. Lamberts Recd 6 votes for assembly
– Mr. Barnes nominated, he receiving 10 votes out of 18 cast.
23rd Thurs. Writing
and working about the house.
24th Fri. At
Squire Lesters attending to suit of Nash Vs Morigh. Squire took till
next day at noon to make up his mind.
25th
Sat. At Madison with Mr. Baird attending County Convention. Took
advice of Counsel on Nash case and found that he is entitled to a
judgment in his favor, for such sum as the Squire may please to give
him. Left Madison at 12 o'clock at night – clear moon light but
very cold.
26th
Sun. At Mr Miles afternoon –learnt from Mr. Lester that he had
given judgment against Nash.
27th
Mon. At judicial election, held in schoolhouse of N.E. district.
28th
Tues. Went up to Lesters to thrash but found my services were not
required. At Mr. Nashs. Commenced to lift my potatoes.
29th Wed. Finished
lifting my potatoes. Stacking corn afternoon. Recd a letter from
John Mitchell.
30th Thurs. Cutting
& carrying thatch.
