Tombstone Tuesday: Keyes, Mother and Son in Mt. Union Cemetery, Benton Co, OR

Susan Jane Ward Keyes (50 years, 5 mos, 6 days) died on February 20, 1881. Her youngest son, Alexander Doran Keyes (26 years, 5 months, 13 days) died just 3 days later. Both are buried beneath this old oak tree, as were the Keyes before and after, in the Mt. Union Cemetery, near Philomath, Oregon.

Susan Ward Keyes was the wife of David Lowery Keyes and the mother of my great-grandfather James Edward Leonardis Keyes.

  1. What a beautiful photo of the cemetery. I love their headstones. When deaths are so close together it really makes you wonder how they died. In these cases it was most likely an illness, right? So sad.

Thank you for your kind words on my blog. They really touched my heart.

  2. Susan and Alexander Keyes, most likely died of a diphtheria outbreak, or possibly influenza. I have been meaning to see if I could get a more definitive answer, but have been sidetracked on my McPherson saga.
